Access to Early &
In our last Early and Family Literacy Committee (EFL) meeting We started our meeting off looking over our charge:
Keep up-to-date on current research in the area of family and early literacy, and share the findings with the library community.
*develop workshops for library personnel on the essential skills of early literacy and techniques
*coordinate and provide advice to ALSC committees and workgroups on early literacy issues.

In the final discussion the discussion, we talked about how difficult it is to obtain early literacy research without hitting an obstacle to pay. Naturally, this ranting session didn’t end there – it led to brainstorming ideas for solutions, including a possible partnership with the Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) or simply seeking out a member of ACRL to join the EFL Committee. Academia.edu is a website that lets academic researchers communicate their research. Another participant suggested that authors and researchers connect with one another directly to determine if they are willing to share their research.
The committee also discussed what it can do to enhance access to the latest research. Hopefully, these strategies will prove beneficial when we begin to provide ALSC members the access to research needed to effectively serve children and families – but we’d also love to hear your ideas.
